Some conservatives believe Chairman Mike Turner abused his power to pressure Republicans to pass a bad spending bill
A fight is brewing among Republicans in Congress, and the House Freedom Fund needs your input.
House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good (R-VA) has called for the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH), to step down.
As you may remember, Turner made headlines recently when he publicly warned of “a serious national security threat.” Congress and the national security community flew into action. Rumors swirled about threats from Russia or China. Experts speculated about space-based or nuclear attacks. Financial markets cratered. And policymakers desperately tried to figure out what was going on.
It turns out Turner’s “warning” may have just been a political stunt.
He issued his warning just as Congress was debating whether to spend billions in foreign aid — and whether to reform the federal government’s warrantless surveillance program.
As days passed, more lawmakers got their eyes on the intelligence Turner was hyping. And it became clear that “hype” was the right word. In hindsight, it looks like Turner may have abused his power as Intelligence chair to scare Congress into passing a bill he wanted.
Freedom Caucus Chairman Good was unequivocal: “Chairman Mike Turner should lose his job over his political stunt this week.”
Rep. Andy Ogles, another Freedom Caucus member, called on House Speaker Mike Johnson to investigate Turner’s recklessness.
